(1 Corinthians 11:24-25 NASB) Remembrance

(1 Corinthians 11:24-25 NASB) "and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, 'This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.' In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.'"

It was a family tradition of ours that we all would gather around the table in the dining room for the Christmas Eve meal. Mom spent a good amount of time preparing this feast, and it seemed that the meal was always served in candle light, which was a special treat for us kids.

The actual menu was a treat too. The family usually would have clam chowder and lobster...........the one time a year that we ate these rich foods.

But inevitably with all of our expectations high, there would be disagreements among us. There always seemed to be one or more of us who wasn't joining in with the rest of us.

That was true except for one year when we all were joining in on the fun..............But I remember at the time having a foreboding thought that this may be the last time we would all be together. Someone even made the comment that "this year" was special to them........And the following year, Mom was diagnosed with cancer.

But to this day I remember with fondness those meals and the sense of closeness I felt to everyone around that table that night.

When I read what Brother Paul wrote in tonight's scripture, I couldn't help but draw parallels between our meal and the Last Supper of the Lord's. Around Him were those closest to Him...............they didn't fully understand what was going to happen but knew from what the Lord said that He wouldn't be there much longer with them.

And after He died, rose again, and ascended into Heaven, He left with all of us a memory that we will always cherish.

And Jesus gave me and my brothers and sisters in Christ the greatest Gift that we could ever receive............the Gift of the Holy Spirit which brings with it Eternal Life.

And when I remember Him through taking communion, I'm not only recalling fondly a Person who I love dearly, but I also recall the great Gift He gave to me.............a Gift that will be with me for eternity.

Love in Jesus,

Jim
