Blue Denim Skirts: The Second Life of Jeans

Posted November 17th, 2011 at 08:08 AM by Lois
Ah, the blue denim skirts. Remember them? A UPC lady now has a business transforming jeans into skirts for Apostolics. Her work was seen at the recent UPC General Conference in Louisville.

Footloose & the UPC

Posted November 16th, 2011 at 07:04 AM by Lois
I'm sure many are aware of the re-make of the movie, "Footloose." What you may not be aware of is what a UPC minister was quoted as saying, at the time of the actual events that this movie is loosely based upon. That affiliated UPC church appears to still be in operation, but pastored by another man.

Quoting from the online source linked to here: "As the Rev. F.R. Johnson of the United Pentecostal Church in nearby Hennepin was quoted in People magazine as saying at the time: 'If you have a dance, somebody will crash it, and they'll be looking for only two things - women and booze. When boys and girls hold each other, they get sexually aroused.'"

The UPC has stood against dancing for many years.

Good things do happen

Posted November 15th, 2011 at 09:30 AM by Lois
Sometimes one of the hardest things for some who leave an unhealthy church, is to acknowledge that despite the abuse or wrong teachings, there were good things and experiences that happened at their old church. When a former member can admit this, it is evidence of their healing process.

People leave with hurts and damage ranging from very mild all the way to very extreme. Some are quite angry at first and may lash out at anything about their church. These people need to be able to openly express their feelings to a point, something that often is not allowed in unhealthy churches.

Usually as time goes on and they learn about what happened, you start to watch their transformation from this into one of healing. And being able to see that there were good times and things, along with the bad, is a definite sign that the healing process has taken hold.

Unless a person was involved in an extreme situation, they really did have some good things happen during their involvement. And even in extreme cases, there is often something good that took place. They may have made lifelong friends, had some good teachings, enjoyed times of fellowship, and so forth. Seeing and acknowledging these things does not set aside the fact that they were hurt and damage occurred.

If you find yourself regularly lashing out in anger toward your former church or group, please find a safe place to work through all the issues. It is one thing to disagree with doctrines and point out abuses which happened, but it is different when you are in anger mode much of the time. Healing is available.

The spiritual abuse website offers a safe place for people to discuss, share, heal and encourage others along the way. Even sometimes get free books and media that may be helpful. This is a link that will take you to a page that explains more about the online support group. Don't allow your former bad church experience to continue to have a negative effect on your life.

Altar Call

Posted November 14th, 2011 at 06:55 PM by truthseeker
The informational posts regarding the speaking in tongues, I want to say Thanks to Lois.
There is another topic I'm wanting to learn about: The Altar Call and the Taking of an Offering. There are lots of "cowboy churches" in this area. (It seems many of them offer roping arenas on the property?) The one I'm most familiar with does not "take" offerings but has a basket at the entry way and (according to some members) there are no altar calls because that is "not biblical".
I've been trying to find evidence regarding the altar call. UPC places so much emphasis on repenting at the altar. Just asking .....

Say it like you actually teach it! It isn't just 'initial' evidence.

Just pondering the doctrine of initial evidence.....

If speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of receiving the Spirit (I am speaking on Apostolic teachings here), then why do so many also expect continued evidence after one initially speaks in tongues?

As mentioned in a prior post, we never see again that those who spoke in tongues in Acts 2, 10 & 19 ever did it a second time. And yet many proponents of this teaching not only expect to see this happen initially, but also need to see its continued use.

How many have been told to 'pray through' after doing something wrong or seemingly wrong or if you left their church for awhile? To these people, 'pray through' means to pray until tongues come again. They want proof that God's Spirit is yet inside you. Maybe you needed it yourself, too. There is no faith at all in this, proof is wanted. It is as if some believe God's Spirit regularly hops in and out of a believer.

Not only is there the thought to 'pray through' to tongues, there can also be things said from the pulpit, like "If you haven't spoken in tongues in the past week (month, etc.), you had better check yourself!" Why? Where is faith? Do believers lose God so easily? Is God so fickle that at the slightest wrong, He up and leaves?

Things, like these and more, to me mean that the teaching is not simply initial evidence. (Note: I know that all Apostolics do not practice or believe the above in regard to the necessity of ongoing tongues.) It is really initial AND ongoing evidence to them. They have a need for a sign that they, and others, are still okay with God. This is not walking by faith or standing on God's promise to never leave, nor forsake, believers.

Think about it. If tongues are indeed the initial evidence, why then is there such a push for this continuing evidence, especially when it is never found in Scripture? When did you ever read Paul pressing believers to 'pray through' again till they spoke in tongues? When did Peter ever teach that if you haven't spoken in tongues in over a month that you'd better find out what was wrong? These doctrines are not taught or seen as examples in the Bible.

So, I say tell it like it really is. They don't mean just initial evidence---they really mean initial AND ongoing evidence throughout your entire walk with God.
